The word joy or rejoice appears 14 times in Paul’s letter to the Philippian church, which makes it easy to see that this is a major theme of the letter. The difference is that he’s not referring to a “pretend” joy that seems to surface whenever some of us act like nothing is wrong, even when we are going through something very difficult. It is something deeper and profound; it is the working of God. It’s not something that masks the trials of real life; but rather it is something that “works through” the trials of life.
